Assistants

An assistant is a published agent: one of your agents on a link of its own, with a name, a welcome message and an accent color, for people who never sign in to the console. Build › Assistants is where builders publish, change and take down assistants, and where admins create the share links that make them reachable.

What an assistant knows and says belongs to its agent. Its model, instructions, knowledge, tools and skills are edited on the agent; the assistant holds only its link, its look and how it answers.

Role What they can do
Admin Everything a Builder does, plus Get share link, and read Who changed what it runs on an assistant’s page
Builder Read every assistant, create one, Edit, Disable, Enable, Delete, change the agent behind a link, Preview chat, open its conversations
Auditor Read every assistant, open its conversations, read Who changed what it runs; changes nothing and cannot preview
Reviewer No access to this page. Chats with published assistants from My conversations and the overview
End user No access to this page. Chats with published assistants, see Chatting with an assistant
Platform admin Holds every capability, in any tenant
  1. The header, Assistants, with one line: the chats your users talk to. A platform admin, or anyone with more than one tenant, chooses the tenant here.
  2. The table toolbar: Search assistants, which matches the name, the entry agent and the model, and New assistant for the roles that publish.
  3. The table, one row per assistant:
Column What it shows
Name The name its users see. Opens the assistant’s page
Entry agent The agent that answers on its link. Opens the agent
Model The agent’s model
Collections How many collections the agent is grounded in
Link The assistant’s address, /a/<slug>
Status Active, Draft or Disabled
Answers via Auto, Direct or Runtime, see How it answers
Created When it was created
Actions A menu named for the assistant: Preview chat, Conversations, Get share link, Edit, Disable or Enable, Delete. Each role sees only the items it may use

With no assistants yet, the page says No assistants yet: an assistant puts one of your agents on a link your users can open. The roles that publish get a New assistant button there.

The header carries the assistant’s name, the line “A published agent: agent, on its own link”, its status, and, for the roles that publish, Edit, Get share link (Admin only) and Disable or Enable.

Two tabs follow. Conversations appears only for the roles that read every conversation.

Overview holds up to three sections:

  • Behind the link: Entry agent (linked), Model, How it answers, and Runs, a link to Runs of its agent in Runs. The roles that publish get Change here.
  • Its link: Slug, Welcome message, Conversation starters and Published. A share link you create on this page appears here, once.
  • Who changed what it runs, for Admins and Auditors: every change of the agent behind the link, newest first, as “From agent to agent” with when and who. Until the first change it reads “Never repointed”.

Conversations lists everyone who has talked to the assistant:

Column What it shows
Conversation Its title: the first question, cut at 60 characters. Opens the conversation in Conversations
Started Date and time it began
Last turn How long ago it last moved
Answers How many answers it holds
Started by Visitor (public link), End user (your application), Console user, or Not recorded

With nobody yet, it reads Nobody has talked to it yet.

If the assistant does not exist, or belongs to another tenant, the page says That assistant is not here. If it could not be read, it says This assistant could not be loaded with Try again; that is not the same as deleted.

New assistant opens the publishing wizard, which starts by asking for the agent. The same wizard opens from Publish as assistant on an agent’s page and its preview. The steps are in Publish and share an assistant.

  1. In the row’s Actions menu, choose Preview chat.
  2. Type a question in Ask a question… and press Send or Enter.

The answer streams in, with its Sources: under it when the agent is grounded in knowledge. A preview is a real conversation: it is answered by the published agent, metered to the tenant and kept under your name. Closing the dialog ends it.

Edit changes the assistant’s own fields. The link stays the same.

  1. Choose Edit in the row’s menu or on the assistant’s page.
  2. Change any of:
    • Name: the name its users see. Required.
    • Welcome message: the greeting on the chat’s start screen.
    • Accent color: one of twelve swatches or Custom color (hex).
    • Conversation starters, one per line: the suggested questions on the start screen.
    • Logo URL: shown above the chat on its link. An https:// address; leave it empty for none.
    • How it answers: Auto, Direct or Runtime.
  3. Choose Save. A toast says Assistant saved.

The form ends with a link to the agent: its model, instructions and knowledge are edited there. Leaving the form with unsaved changes asks first.

Choice What happens
Auto (default) The agent runs with its tools, skills and collaborators when it has any; otherwise the answer is retrieval from its knowledge and one model call
Direct Retrieval and one model call, with citations. The agent’s tools are not reachable
Runtime The agent always runs, tools or not

Repointing changes which agent answers. Users keep the same link and their conversation history; the next turn of every conversation runs on the new agent, with the conversation so far as its context.

  1. On the assistant’s page, in Behind the link, choose Change.
  2. In Agent, choose the agent to answer on this link.
  3. Optional: follow Preview agent before switching to try it in a new tab.
  4. Choose Switch. A toast says Entry agent changed.

The change is recorded under your name. To go back, repoint: Admins see a Repoint to agent button on each earlier change in Who changed what it runs.

Disable takes the link down. Anyone who opens it is told the assistant is unavailable; its conversations and settings are kept, and Enable brings the same link back. Disabling asks first, by name; enabling does not.

A Draft assistant does not answer either. Enable makes it Active.

  1. Choose Delete in the row’s menu.
  2. Read the dialog and confirm Delete.

The link stops working for good and its conversations are deleted. The agent behind it is deleted too, unless another assistant still publishes it or it ships with the platform; the dialog says which.

What Limit
Name 1 to 80 characters; unique among the tenant’s assistants
Link /a/<slug>: the name in lowercase with every other character turned into -, cut at 40 characters, plus - and 8 random hexadecimal characters. Fixed when the assistant is created; renaming does not change it
Accent color A hex color, such as #0f62fe
Logo URL Starts with https:// (or http://)
Status Active, Draft or Disabled; only Active answers on its link
Conversation title The first question, cut at 60 characters
